Fabulous concert at St Peter's

VOSKRESENIJE at St Peter’s Shaldon 17 October 2017

This Russian a cappella ensemble of eight singers (2 sopranos, 2 altos, countertenor, tenor, bass and basso profondo) with their conductor, Jurij Maruk,  gave us a fabulous concert on Tuesday evening.   They came back by popular request as they were outstanding last year, but this year they were even better.

Their programme is extremely well chosen and includes several solos allowing each singer to demonstrate the range of their beautiful voices enhanced by St Peter’s wonderful acoustic.   The Concert was much enjoyed by the large audience who gave the ensemble a standing ovation.

Voskresenije return to Dunoon

The choir made a most successful return to Dunoon, on the Argyll coast of the Firth of Clyde. Holy Trinity church, we reckon, holds 100 people in comfort, but on a cold, clear evening in November we packed 120 into the audience. Comfortable or not, they were wildly enthusiastic. Voskresenije were in great form, and people loved them and their music. The acoustic remained lovely despite all the bodies, and the atmosphere was electric.

 The choir have been visiting this church since 2001, though in order to ensure maximum impact the organisers have in recent years settled on a concert every two years. In a small town, it can be difficult to create a buzz if people become too used to having the event. This was probably the biggest audience we've had - and the music was well worth the effort!

Advent Song: John McIntosh

Advent Song is the latest composition from John McIntosh, a Scottish composer with whom Voskresenije has worked for many years. A good friend of Jurij Maruk and the choir, he has written several arrangements specially for Voskresenije. This performance, in Holy Trinity Church, Dunoon, Scotland, is by a quartet of singers including John McIntosh and Christine McIntosh (alto) who wrote the words for this piece.
